Seattle's Straight Edge / Hardcore Scene

The Seattle suburbs are where many Hardcore bands call home. Seattle's straight edge scene is growing, with more and more kids joining in. Straight Edgers (recognized by the big black X on their hands) are Vegetarian and Drug-Free. The level of hardcore varies; some are vegan (no meat, no dairy products), some pledge abstinence. Whatever level they are at they follow their favorite bands with vigor. Screaming seems to be a must for most hardcore bands. This scene has produced national bands like Earth Crisis. Locally, Trial, Botch, and State Route 522 dominate this scene.

90 Pound Wuss

I saw this band during a Sold-Out show Capitol Theatre in Olympia. Man did they rock the house. The singer was energetic and exciting, conitinusly making leaps into the crowd. Other times the crowd sang along when this ferocious singer stuck his microphone in the crowd. I lost him in the crowd during one song, only to see him come back onstage with a broken mike cord. This fact soon ended their set. Overall it was a great performance. giving me many exciting photos....

MxPx

This Christian Punk trio is lighting up the phones at local radio sations. They play a catchy Green Day type punk. The crowd was young, anywhere from 10 - 17 years old. The line was enoumous, at least a hundred or so fans were turned away at the door. To make it up MxPx agreed to play a second show, for the turned away fans. The tired MxPx got up around 12am to do a second show for the 150 or so that stayed to see them play. It wasn't as action packed as the first one, it had a more of a small club feeling. MxPx is on the rise, check out their songs on an alternative music station near you.

BOTCH

This guy screams all the time - I can never understand what he's saying.

Trial

Founded by my friend Greg, a hardcore band with deep political undertones.

State Route 522

I really don't like Hardcore, but these guys are awesome.

ThE PLaN

Not much to say, seen them twice, sound a lot like Green Day.

Red Rocket

This Eastside band arose from the ashes of Ten-o-Seven. Red Rocket quicly became a favorite on the Eastside scene. Led by the powerful vocals of Matt Rocket, this band contiues to play the all-ages circut. They may not be a national legend but they're certianly a local one. They have influenced a whole new generation of local bands. The people who grew up watching them perform have go on to form their own bands.
